Job Description

The Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station (NAES) at the University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a Ranch Manager in Eureka, Nevada . ***This position does not provide layoff rights and is contingent upon funding. The mission of the Eureka Station is to demonstrate sustainable, Integrated Management of Crops, Sheep, and Rangeland in Dryland Environments and provide education and outreach to the agricultural community and area producers. This position is critical to the establishment of the station, maintenance of the breeding flock and pending research functions.

The successful candidate will manage the daily operations of the Rafter 7 Merino and Merino Rambouillet sheep in an arid rangeland and private pasture environment. The Rafter 7 flock is a unique and exceptional flock of sheep that has been bred for range hardiness for high quality lamb and wool production. The flock will also contribute to rangelands research, benefits of multiple species grazing, wildlife and livestock interactions, animal disease control and improved production or best management practices. Service duties will include daily management of the flock and associated herders, coordination and participation with research scientists, and outreach and educational activities.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with major course work in resource management, animal science or closely related agricultural field and three years of experience managing all aspects of a range cattle operation; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

This position requires experience with sheep herd management. For this recruitment, we are considering sheep herding experience as “cattle experience.”

A valid Class “C” driver’s license or higher operator’s license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with demonstrated abilities in multi-language and cultural communication, skilled in management of rangeland sheep, ability to operate a range of agricultural machinery including tractors and trucks, effectively multitasking priorities, with a positive attitude, strong problem solving abilities and committed to improving farm efficiency and profitability and willing to live and work in a remote location are encouraged to apply.


The position will work a variable work schedule; this is subject to change based on organizational needs.
